Halloween Décor Through Lighting: Dark Rooms That Still Photograph Well

The Ornate Team · 26 October 2026 · 3 min read

How to light a Halloween party so it feels dark and atmospheric while photographs still work: colour, direction, where to put the light, and a test to run before guests arrive.

A dark room is easy to make and hard to photograph. The trick with Halloween lighting is that 'dark' describes a mood, not a measurement. A room can feel dark while the faces in it remain properly lit, and the best parties are lit exactly that way.

The short answer

Light a Halloween party with low, warm or coloured ambient light, and keep a softer light on faces: candles on tables, wall washes at the edges and a lit photo corner. The room feels dark while photographs stay usable. Avoid overhead white light and avoid placing every light behind the guests.

What colours work for Halloween?

Deep purple with warm amber, or low red with gold, reads as Halloween without any props. Too many colours reads as a nightclub. Choose a base and an accent and hold to them across lighting, fabric and flowers.

How do you light faces in a dim room?

Use low, close light

Candles on tables and soft side light mean guests are lit from below and the side, which flatters. Overhead white flattens everyone and makes the room look like a meeting.

Light the edges, not the middle

Washing the walls and edges of a room with colour makes the space feel enclosed and atmospheric. Leaving the centre dimmer lets people be the focal point.

Build a photo corner

Guests photograph themselves wherever the light is best. Give them a corner with deliberate light, a simple backdrop and room for a group. It keeps the rest of the room dark and the photographs good.

Is lighting different outdoors or on a rooftop?

Yes. Outdoors, there is no ceiling to bounce light from, so lighting is built from strings, lanterns and low uplighting. Wind matters for any open flame. ORNATE's Sky Banquet has about 4,000 sq ft enclosed and 3,000 sq ft open, plus a pool area and deck, so both approaches can sit together. Our piece on lighting the Lawn at night explains the outdoor thinking in more detail.

How do you test it?

  • Set the lights as you intend to run them on the night.
  • Take phone photographs at the stage, the bar and the entrance.
  • Adjust until faces are clear and the room still feels dark.
  • Check the room again with a few people in it, since bodies change the light.

Frequently asked questions

How dark is too dark?

If a phone photograph cannot show faces, add light on the faces rather than the room.

What colours work best?

One or two: purple with amber, or low red with gold.

Do I need a photographer?

Not necessarily, but a lit photo corner helps guests photograph themselves.

Is a rooftop suitable for a dark party?

It can be, with strings, lanterns and low uplighting. Wind matters for open flames.
